Emmanuel College is a coeducational residential Catholic college, serving over 2,300 undergraduate and graduate students. The college is building a new four-story, 47,500 square foot academic science building. which will be located adjacent to the existing historical administration building, which is undergoing a multi-phase renovation at the same time.
Thomas G. Gallagher, Inc., was hired by Walsh brothers to install a new state-of-the-art mechanical system that will serve both the science building and the renovated administration building. The seven air handling units range from 3,400 CFM to 45,000 CFM. Air will be conditioned by chilled and hot water closed-loop systems that are fed by two new gas fired boilers and two new centrifugal chillers. The air distributed to each floor will be zone controlled, and will re-circulate through two energy recovery units located on the roof of the administration building.
The administration building will be occupied during the project. Thomas G. Gallagher, Inc., is working closely with the mechanical engineer to phase each zone, in order to maintain comfortable working conditions for the occupants.
The project is stretched over a long period of time, so careful planning of each phase during renovation was crucial. The coordination drawings were produced immediately, so that there was no delay of the start of the project. A high degree of organization between all trades involved was necessary in order for the project to succeed.
